One of the most famous Russian folk dances is the round dance "Birch". This dance represents the synchronized movement of the dancers and the simultaneous performance of the song. Characteristic elements are smooth movements in a circle, a chain (one after another), a snake, in two lines; rotation around each other or in pairs around common centers in groups; narrow and frequent steps giving the impression of sliding. The dancers hold handkerchiefs or birch branches in their hands.
