The Ice Hockey World Championship has been held by the International Ice Hockey Federation since 1920. Initially, the tournament was held only as part of the Olympic Games, but since 1930 the competition has become an annual event (with the exception of 1940–1946, 1980, 1984 and 1988).
Soviet hockey players made their debut at the World Championships in 1954 and immediately took a leading position in world hockey. In the entire history of the championships, our country’s team has won 27 gold (the largest number among all participating countries), 10 silver and 7 bronze medals.
The 80th Ice Hockey World Championship in 2016 is taking place in Russia at two ice arenas in Moscow and St. Petersburg. 16 teams will participate in the tournament, including the Russian Federation as the host country.
The postage stamp depicts the official mascot of the 2016 Ice Hockey World Championship in Russia - the dog Laika wearing a hockey sweater.
